Jesus
entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. Throngs of people made
way for Him through the city carpeting His path with their cloaks and
with palm branches. They shouted His praises, "Blessed is the
King who comes in the name of the Lord! (Luke 19:38)"
"Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Hosanna in the
highest! (Matthew 21:9)" Matthew 21:10 says that "...the
whole city was stirred...." Luke 19:37 tells us that "...the
whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices
for all the miracles they had seen..."
Is Jesus a king? At His judgment Pilate asked Him that very
question (John 18:33-37), "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus' answer, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were,
my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But
now my kingdom is from another place."
"You are a king then!" said Pilate.
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In
fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth
listens to me."
Pilate had a notice written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek which said,
"Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews" and had it fastened to Jesus'
cross. John 19:21-22 goes on to say, "The chief priests of
the Jews protested to Pilate, 'Do not write The King of the Jews, but that this man claimed to be
king of the Jews.' Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I
have written.'"
John in the book of Revelation refers to Jesus as "...the faithful
witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the
earth. In visions pertaining to the future (Revelation 17:14,
19:16) Jesus' title is "King of kings and Lord of lords."
Jesus is King -- King of the Universe. He created
it. He sustains it and all that He has made --
lovingly. Why? For He is Love. Love is
supreme -- king of all ways of being. Jesus is King of kings
and Lord of lords and worthy of our adoration and praise.
