God
introduces Himself to the patriarch, Abram (Abraham) in Genesis 17:1
saying, "I am Almighty God,..." The Hebrew for "Almighty God"
is El
Shaddai, and
it quite simply means "God,
the mighty" or "God the powerful."
Let's consider just how
powerful and how mighty. It was He who made the heavens and
the earth. Before God's act of creation there was no earth,
there was no moon -- no sun, no stars, no Universe.
There was God and there was
nothing.
From that nothing God made
everything. God is bigger and more powerful than that which
He made. Consider the enormity of the Universe and all of the
power it contains. We shudder to think of the power unleashed
in the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War-ll, yet we
know that the power of those bombs was nothing in comparison to the
H-bombs of today. We see the tremendous power of earthquakes,
hurricanes, tornados, and erupting volcanos. Yet all those
powers combined are nothing in comparison to the power unleashed in an
exploding star, for example.
But in these considerations
we've been talking about physical power. God's greatest power
is spiritual. It is the power of His love that is most
significant. We are told in 1 John 4:8 & 16 that "God is
love." That "Love" that God is, was manifest to us
by God through the Son of God, Jesus Christ. In Him we
understand the depths of love, of caring and of concern for those He
has created, because He was willing to add humanity to His deity to
demonstrate His love for humanity by dying for us all.
He is an awesome and
a mighty God! He is the Almighty! |
